They’re held shut by gravity. Casement windows, which swing outward, are easier for wind to push open or slam closed. Single hung windows do not have this problem. They remain fixed in their track even when the wind is at its strongest.
They sit tightly in a track. Because single hung windows slide up and down on a track, they’re less likely to leak water or air. When closed, all but the top of the adjustable part of the window are snug in a track. The top side is pressed tightly against the static part of the window and a rubber seal prevents leaking.
They’re usually on the small side. The smaller a pane of glass, the less likely it is to break from impact. That makes these compact windows pretty sturdy.
